Aubrieta: Early Spring Blooms for Zones 4-8

Gardeners in USDA zones 4 to 8 can enjoy early spring blooms with Aubrieta (Aubrieta deltoidea), also known as false rockcress. This deer-resistant, drought-tolerant perennial forms vibrant purple carpets and thrives in rock gardens.

Aubrieta prefers full sun but tolerates partial shade. It grows well in well-drained soil and spreads up to 24 inches (61 cm.). To grow Aubrieta, sow seeds on the surface of well-draining soil, keeping the area moderately wet but not soggy. Once established, it requires minimal water and is low-maintenance.

After blooming, cut back Aubrieta to discourage seeding and maintain its compact form. Every one to three years, divide Aubrieta to prevent center die out and propagate more plants. Aubrieta has few disease or insect pest issues, but poor drainage can cause problems.

Aubrieta is an excellent choice for gardeners seeking low-effort, high-impact spring blooms. Its adaptability to various light conditions, minimal water needs, and deer resistance make it a valuable addition to any garden in suitable zones.
