Assessment of Outset Coffee, Specifically Its Controversial Mango Lattes
San Francisco's Financial District is home to an unconventional café, Outset Coffee, which adopts an eye-catching, vibrant orange theme. As patrons walk through the door, they're greeted by an orange juice-squeezing robot, setting the venue's inviting ambience. The interior, complete with orange-painted walls and orange furniture, reinforces the café's distinct character.
A colossal orange logo stands out in the cafe's interior, symbolizing the establishment's focus on creative coffee – a diverse menu of coffee beverages infused with surprising combinations of fruit flavors. Patrons can find familiar coffee shop staples like lattes and espresso, complemented by more exotic drink options such as avocado lattes, durian lattes, and orange juice Americanos.
During my visit, I opted for a "Dirty" Mango Latte – a layered concoction of flavors featuring a bottom layer of mango purée, milk on top, and espresso above that, crowned with a thick layer of mango foam, resembling mango-flavored Cool Whip. The drink's "dirty" moniker reflects the presence of espresso, but the beverage can easily be custom-made without coffee.
Combining coffee with mango might seem unorthodox, especially in coffee cultures like Seattle. Yet, Outside Coffee, nestled within San Francisco's diverse food scene, fits seamlessly within the city's culinary identity. Popular Asian-inspired drinks, like bubble tea, resonate with San Franciscans, making Outside Coffee's drink offerings feel like a natural extension of the local market.
The mango latte's complex interplay of flavors was refreshing, rounded off with an unexpected adventure while riding in a Waymo self-driving car. If blending traditional Asian tea flavors with San Francisco's espresso scene results in unique creations like the mango latte, I'm looking forward to my next visit, where I'll embrace the orange theme fully and try the café's freshly squeezed orange juice from that robot!
