In a move aimed at enhancing safety and comfort for cyclists, the city council of Magdeburg has approved the construction of the "Leipzig Combination Lane" at the intersection of Große Diesdorfer Straße/Gerhart-Hauptmann- Straße. The Deputy Mayor for Environment and Urban Development, Jörg Rehbaum, officially inaugurated the new facility.

The "Leipzig Combination Lane" is a mandatory lane that is wider than the previous protected lane, which was frequently driven over and occasionally used for parking. To distinguish it from other lanes, new road markings have been applied, and traffic lights have been reprogrammed.

The new division of road space is expected to significantly increase cycling safety, according to the city administration and the ADFC. The ADAC, too, had advocated for a clear separation of cycling from motorized traffic, and the new lane is a step towards achieving this goal.

The function of the new lane is to provide the right lane on Große Diesdorfer Straße for right-turning motor vehicles and cyclists traveling straight or to the right. The remaining motor vehicle traffic on this street does not have a dedicated lane, instead sharing the respective tram tracks with the MVB.

In July, prominent guide rails were installed between Gerhart-Hauptmann-Straße and Arndtstraße to secure and better separate the new bike lane. This measure should help to prevent encroachment by motor vehicles and ensure a safer environment for cyclists.

With the introduction of the "Leipzig Combination Lane", Magdeburg continues its efforts to promote sustainable mobility and create a city that is friendly to cyclists. The city administration hopes that the new lane will encourage more people to choose cycling as a means of transportation, contributing to a healthier and more environmentally-friendly city.
