Approaching ideal distance at 2.7 kilometers mark...

The city of Cologne is embarking on a significant renovation project aimed at enhancing cycling infrastructure and environmental connectivity, particularly at the Ludwig-Hammers-Platz. The renovation will improve access to the bike parking tower currently under construction at Bilker S-Bahn station, as well as connect the adjacent streets Friedrichstraße and Aachener Straße, which are part of the main cycling network.

The renovation project encompasses extensive upgrades to the complex intersection that includes six adjacent streets, including Aachener Straße and Merowingerstraße. To facilitate this, motor vehicle traffic on Aachener Straße will be guided onto the median, allowing the current lane including the green strip to be allocated to the side area. This will provide sufficient space for distributing cycling traffic and standing areas for pedestrians.

Cycling traffic in the southern direction will be guided on a separate cycling lane alongside the two-lane carriageway of Friedrichstraße towards Aachener Straße and Merowingerstraße. Local traffic on Aachener Straße, currently open to local traffic only from Karolingerstraße in the northern direction, will be regulated by a traffic light as a left-turn onto Burghofstraße.

The entrance to Burghofstraße will be equipped with a paved crossing for pedestrians and cyclists, ensuring safer and smoother movement for all users. Crossing Aachener Straße will be done via a traffic light, simplifying and making the crossings barrier-free.

The speed limit on Merowingerstraße has already been reduced to 30 km/h to further improve air quality and enhance compatibility between car and cycling traffic. This reduction, combined with the renovation, will extend the cycling network by 2.7 kilometers into the city center.

The renovation will create another attractive cycling axis directly into the city center, according to Mobility Commissioner Jochen Kral and Florian Reeh, head of the Traffic Management Office, who inspected the start of the work. The connection of Aachener Straße and Merowingerstraße to the cycling network will further boost the city's commitment to sustainable urban mobility.

The renovation project in Cologne, extending into the home-and-garden area of Ludwig-Hammers-Platz, not only aims to improve cycling infrastructure but also connects it with the finance sector through the development of the bike parking tower at the Bilker S-Bahn station. As transportation is affected with the reorganization of traffic lanes, residents and commuters may find changes in their lifestyle, enhancing the use of bikes for daily commuting. Additionally, the reduction in speed limit on Merowingerstraße to 30 km/h, part of the industry's environmental efforts, will also affect the lifestyle of city dwellers, promoting a greener and healthier living environment.
