Alte Ziegelei Park Transforms for IGA 2027 with Green Classroom and Eco Habitats
The 'Alte Ziegelei' park in Westphalia and Lippe is undergoing a transformation ahead of the IGA 2027. New paths have been constructed, and a striking retaining wall of Ruhr sandstone has been built, serving both as a landscape feature and visitor seating. At the heart of this redesign is the creation of a 'Green Classroom', a semicircular space for environmental education and events.
The Urban Greenery department and the Westphalia and Lippe State Association of Small Gardeners e.V. have joined forces to redesign a section of the park. Landscape architect Peter Latz conceptualised the 'Green Classroom' within this redesign. The space is defined by a semicircular retaining wall, which not only provides seating but also forms the core of the educational area.
In addition to the 'Green Classroom', two ecologically valuable habitats have been created. A dry grassland area and a wet meadow have been established to support local flora and fauna. These habitats will contribute to the park's biodiversity and provide opportunities for visitors to engage with nature.
