A new museum and theme park planned for Codlea will draw inspiration from traditional Romanian folk tales.
Romanian Fairy Tales Museum in Codlea: A Major Urban Regeneration Project
The small town of Codlea in Romania is set to undergo a significant transformation with the implementation of the Romanian Fairy Tales Museum project. This ambitious urban regeneration project, with a total funding request of over RON 18 million, aims to revitalize unused urban spaces and boost tourism in the Brașov area.
Approximately RON 15.3 million of the funding comes from non-reimbursable European funds, with the local municipality and the Regional Development Agency for the Central Region spearheading the project. The project's goal is to create a themed park inspired by Romanian folk tales, which is expected to differentiate Codlea's tourist offerings from other attractions in the Brașov area.
The themed park, spanning over 1,500 square metres, will be built on a previously unused plot in the Maial area, a local spot known for picnics and outdoor activities. The park consists of nine newly constructed zones, including the Hero's House, Enchanted Stable, Ogre's House, Witch's House, a mythical cave, Princess's Tower, a castle for interactive games, an amphitheater, and a village street showcasing traditional crafts.
Simion Cretu, General Director of the Regional Development Agency Central, stated that the new themed park will aim to educationally and attractively explore themes from Romanian folk tales. The park will feature statues and set pieces representing characters from Romanian fairy tales and legends.
The surrounding green area, nearly 17,000 square metres, will be landscaped with pathways, gazebos, pergolas, benches, parking spaces, and durable vegetation suitable for recreational use. The site will also be equipped with ticketing systems, lighting, and audio-video surveillance.
In addition to the local collaborations, the project plans to create opportunities for experience exchanges and study visits with cultural institutions from other Romanian regions and Danube countries. This collaboration aims to adopt best practices in cultural tourism development.
The project timeline is estimated at 36 months to complete all objectives, emphasizing sustainable urban and cultural development supported largely by European structural funds.
