Vintage Sessions Electric Table Clock Model 3W: A Rare Find in a Collection of Mechanical Clocks

In an unexpected addition to his collection, a clock enthusiast has acquired a vintage Sessions electric table clock, model 3W. Made by the Sessions Clock Co. in Forestville, Connecticut in 1936, this unique piece stands out as the only electric clock in a collection of mechanical clocks.

The clock, measuring 4 1/2 inches tall and 8 1/4 inches wide, is made of one block of wood, likely pine, with a tinted lacquer finish. Initially, the finish had almost completely worn off, but a refinishing project with a light walnut stain, several coats of shellac, and paste wax has given the clock a richer, darker finish, more in keeping with the original.

Despite being an exception to the collector's preference for mechanical clocks, the Model 3W's charm lies in its simplicity. It features a sweep second hand and only one control, a push-and-twist-in knob that sets the time. Notably, it lacks an alarm, making it unsuitable for a bedside table.

The clock was sold in Canada and bears a Canadian Standards Approval sticker on the back, a testament to its history. Interestingly, the government of the Yukon Territory in Canada has recently decided to no longer observe Daylight Saving Time, making this vintage clock even more relevant to its new home.

For those interested in identifying and valuing vintage Sessions electric table clocks, specifically the Model 3W, several factors should be considered. Firstly, one must look for the Sessions company name, usually on the clock face, dial, or movement. The model number "3W" should also be verified, which may be found on the clock's movement or inside its case. Authenticity can be checked by examining the clock’s mechanical movement and electrical components, ensuring they match known Sessions designs and era.

The value of a Model 3W depends largely on its condition, originality, and working status. Rarity and demand for specific Sessions models contribute to price. Market data on similar vintage electric clocks (though not Model 3W specifically) suggests typical values range from $50 to several hundred dollars. Condition factors such as an intact case and dial, working motor, undamaged glass front, and original electric cord matter significantly.

For precise identification and valuation, consulting dedicated vintage clock collector websites, horology forums, or professional appraisers specializing in electric clocks is recommended. As direct sources detailing the Model 3W are scarce, these resources can provide valuable insights into this unique and fascinating piece of horological history.
